A nice size country primitive mid 19th century
antique wood splint basket with old green and orange paint.
Made of oak or ash splints with 33 ribs, a concave bottom,
and a double wrapped rim. The bent wood
handle is solid and retains traces of the old orange paint, most notably on the
underside. Both the interior and the
exterior appear to have most of the old pale grayish green paint intact.
Measures about 12 ½” in diameter. Basket is 5 ½” high on one side and 6” on the other. Total height, including handle is about 10”.
An extremely fine example of folk art with lovely
patina. In very sturdy condition with
no breaks in the basket base noted.
Some of the rim wrapping is missing – please see the photos.
