What a fantastic find! Made by Redmon of Peru, Indiana this large red & white wicker picnic basket comes complete with its original flatware, dishes, and extras! Even better – this set appears to never have been used!
Inside the picnic chest, there are 6 plastic rectangular divided plates, still in the original Redmon (Redman) plastic bag and 6 matching cups. Typical of Redmon picnic baskets, there is a divider shelf on legs to keep your hot dog buns (or whatever) from getting mashed. On the underside of the lid 6 forks, 6 spoons, a paring knife and a bottle opener are held by elastic bands. There are two empty spaces that would probably hold mustard and ketchup bottles. Also included is a small thermos and 2 round metal pieces that I have no idea what the purpose is. They were in the picnic chest and so they will stay.
The picnic chest measures 14 ˝” high x 22” wide x 11” deep. There is a brass colored latch at the front of the basket and two white plastic handles on each side. One of the plastic handles is missing but the hardware that held the handle is unharmed and it would be a simple matter to remove the other handle and replace them with another type of handle. There is a small area near the latch on the front where some of the red has bled on to the white trim. Not terribly distracting, but worth mentioning. The area is marked on the photo, but my camera did not pick up the red on the white braid.
When you’re not using this great vintage picnic basket for a special outing, it has super decorating appeal! Great for retro kitchens and romantic country and primitive décor.
