This wonderful collectible antique pinwheel is formed from carved bone and has painted decoration on the top.
A pinwheel is a type of pincushion where two pieces of bone, shell, ivory, wood, silver or other such material form a sandwich of wool or other soft material. Pins are then stuck on the outer edges of this circular pin cushion or "wheel".
This pinwheel measures just short of 1 1/2" in diameter. The painted decoration is worn mostly off but the bone and carving is delightful with raised "beads". Holes are drilled to allow the threads that hold muslin type fabric covering the sandwiched material to sew the disks together.
Overall condition is very good.
